A hold-to-run switch, also known as an enabling switch, is a safety device used to control machine functions in hazardous areas while ensuring the safety of operators. It works by requiring the operator to maintain constant pressure on the switch for the machine to operate.

In the OFF position the machine is in a safe state and cannot be activated. To start, the operator presses the switch to ON — but the machine only continues to operate while pressure is maintained. If the operator releases the switch for any reason, including a startle reaction or an emergency, the machine immediately returns to OFF.

This ensures that machine operation stays under the direct control of the operator and ceases if the operator is unable to maintain pressure — critical during belt tracking and maintenance operations.
